 2017 Preview

Escambia County finished the 2016 season with a disappointing 2-8 record. Last year Escambia County finished seventh in Class 4A region one with a 0-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

The Blue Devils have not qualified for the playoffs since the 2010 season and would love to end that streak this year.

The offense struggled putting points on the score board as Escambia County averaged scoring just 13.0 points a game. The Blue Devils also struggled on the defensive side of the football as they found little success in stopping opposing offenses and allowed an average of 38.6 points a game.

The Blue Devils would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 3-17 record. Since 2010, Escambia County has gone a combined 23-50. Their 32.0% winning percentage ranks 48th in Class 4A over the past seven seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Escambia County has not won much with a record of 85-185. Their 32.0% winning percentage ranks 54th in Class 4A and 335th in the AHSAA.

Royce Young leaves Escambia County High after three seasons with an unimpressive 4-26 record. His teams could never seem to find a winning formula at the once great football program. The school has fallen on tough times on the gridiron after being a powerhouse through the 1980s.

Rico Jackson arrives in Atmore to assume the head coaching duties for the Blue Devils. He has served as the head football coach at Fairfield and Aliceville where his teams finished a combined 35-21 in five seasons.

Coach Jackson's overall record as a head football coach in five season stands at 35-21 (62.5%). Over the course of his career, Coach Jackson's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times and won one region championship.

The Escambia County Blue Devils will play in Class 4A region one during the 2017 season. The Blue Devils have one of the toughest schedules in Class 4A. Their opponents had a combined record of 67-47 last season. That ranks 5th in Class 4A and 27th in the AHSAA.

This season, the Blue Devils will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region one.

The Blue Devils open the 2017 season at home against non-region opponent Wilcox Central on Friday, September 1 at Hubert Barnes Field. Last year the Wilcox Central Jaguars finished with an overall record of 3-7 and in seventh place in Class 5A region one.

Escambia County and Wilcox Central have met a total of 13 times on the football field. The Blue Devils have a 10-3-0 record against the Jaguars. They last met in 2016 with Escambia County winning by a score of 24-16.
